fitrah

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

"Muslims consider accepting Islam to be merely 'reverting' to the human being's natural disposition of acknowledging and worshipping the One God, thus the use of 'revert' instead of 'convert'." (authors note, From My Sisters' Lips by Na'ima Roberts)

While reading and reflecting on my notes form this book, this point made me think a lot about the fitra - the natural disposition.

Before I didn't really care about using the term "covert" vs "revert" - usually I would say "I became Muslim" or something like that... but now I feel like yes, I was born on fitrah,... believing and being as a Muslim is the natural state of the soul. So when I am in the state of Islam... that is the natural state, the soul is in harmony with the created universe... it is at peace with itself and with the creation and with our Creator.

I was always a created being, with Allah as my Sustainer, Creator, Ilah.... even when I didn't know that. It was Allah that formed me in my mother's womb, and breathed into me my soul (ruh, in Arabic).

"Then we formed the drop into an alaq (embryo) and formed alaq into a lump and formed the lump into bones and clothed the bones in flesh thus bringing forth another creature. Blessed be God, the Best of Creators!" (Qur’an 23:14)

"Allah brought you out of your mothers’ wombs knowing nothing at all, and gave you hearing, sight and hearts so that perhaps you would give thanks." (Qur’an 16:78)

"He is the Knower of the Unseen and the Visible, the Almighty, the Most Merciful, who perfected everything He created. He originated the creation of the human from clay, then He made his offspring from a clot of weak water (semen). Then He created him and (caused the angel to) breathe into him his (created) spirit. He gave you eyes and ears, and hearts, yet little do you give thanks." (Qur'an 32:6-9)

I feel happy, and less like a "convert" - Islam is not something I discovered and then accepted, and it only entered my life at that point, rather Islam was always around me, part of me... Allah always was aware of me, Sustaining me, but I only really saw that later on. And everyone was created, whether they are living as "muslims" or not, each person was created in the same way and is sustained by the same Lord, inside of each child is the same fitrah.
